So you've decided where you want to go, or what you want to do, with your POINTS. But how are you going to earn those POINTS? Here are some ideas… Look Around You! Take a look around you and see what could be improved. Is there a lot of graffiti in your area? Is there an area of wasteland that could be cleared up? Fancy a community garden? Or is there just a lot of litter that needs clearing? If you look closely you'll see there are lots of opportunities to improve the area you live in: Graffiti The chemicals needed to clean up graffiti can be nasty stuff - why not create a community mural instead? Or maybe just paint over it. It doesn't take much to make your area look nicer… Community gardens A community garden is a green space that is managed (and may be developed) by a neighbourhood community. Community gardens can physically brighten up derelict sites and provide new uses for the buildings on them. There is a wide range of other potential benefits - ecological, economic and social, habitats for local wildlife, local, organic food production, a base for further community action like community composting and recycling. Have a look at these sites for some ideas: www.sbbc.co.uk/resources/new_is/G3.htm www.farmgarden.org.uk Litter Picking Litter picking is a simple way to earn points and make your area look better. You can do an hour's work or 5 hours, there's always rubbish to be cleaned! Make sure you're careful with things like broken bottles or glass, and always work with an adult as there are some things that should be left to your local council. There are many organisations in the UK who organise work projects like these that you could get involved with to earn your points. Check out these websites and contact your local branch to find out more: Groundwork UK Groundwork is an organisation that runs offices across the country. They organise practical projects to help improve the environment and get local people involved - there's probably one near you!
