William Sutton Trust
YP @ S6 was set up by registered social landlord, William Sutton Trust (WST) to tie in with the 10 year regeneration program of its inner-city Salford estate. After hearing about the Dream Scheme at a Social Landlords Crime and Nuisance Conference, WST saw the opportunity to bid to the new DfEE Neighbourhood Support Fund, aimed at supporting young people at risk of social exclusion.

The bid was successful and the project was born under the guidance of a steering group made up of representatives from the Dream Scheme Network, Salford Youth Service, WST and local residents association.

As a completely new venture, there were some early teething problems but by early Summer 2001, a team of 3 part-time youth workers was in place and work began.

YP@S6 is now one of the great Dreamscheme success stories. Since the early days they have attended the Neighbourhood Support Fund Regional Conference; the William Sutton Trust National Tenants Conference & those of you who have attended PARTYcipation will remember the tremendous hard work and contributions the group has made to Dreamscheme's Annual Conference. The young people are becoming old hands at presenting their achievement on video and in workshops.

This hard work has been recognized through the positive publicity they have generated in an area that continues to receive bad press, including local radio, cable TV interviews and articles in a national housing magazine.

The young people of YP@S6 have expanded their activities to include intergenerational work with training charity Radio Regen - writing and presenting a community radio show with a group of retired residents, made a strong link that has continued with other activities run jointly with the Residents Association. Links with the local community continue to strengthen with Halloween & Christmas parties for local families.

The enthusiasm that YP@S6 has generated in the area has led to the establishment of Club 10-12 after they identified the need for younger people to have a club. As NSF funds 13-19s only they used with Children's Fund money and set up Club 10-12 in June 2002. This is run by YP @ S6 young people as a peer-support project, for which they earn points.

With a focus on teamwork and personal development work, YP@S6 also run annual residential weekend breaks, where other activities are planned - these form a major challenge for the young people and they enjoy a diverse range of activities, from planning club sessions to abseiling down a cliff.

Although it is an enclosed project with limited links outside the estate, YP@S6 are starting to develop these links and relationships. Young adults interested in computer skills led to arrangements being made with Employment Regeneration Partnership that benefited adults in the community.

Following an end of grant review, a business plan is being drawn up and a celebration day was held at the end of October organized jointly with the Dreamscheme Network to mark their achievements with everyone involved and look to the future. Good luck!
