Guinness Trust
The Guinness Trust Killisick Estate is a 240-property estate with 40 of those properties as sheltered schemes for elderly people. There are approximately 200 children and young people living on the estate.

There is a lack of provision for young people on the estate - no usable play facilities, no opportunities for young people to meet anywhere safe, no provision of youth workers or youth clubs. The estate has suffered from high levels of anti social behaviour lately with young people causing much of this.

The Dreamscheme Project is run by community members for young people in the community - this has been the key to its success now and in the future. It was led by 6 Guinness Trust residents from the Residents Association with help from other residents and Guinness Trust staff.

The project involved 17 young people aged 9-14. The residents wanted to provide an opportunity for the young people of the estate to be engaged positively and as a result to reduce the levels of antisocial behaviour on the estate. The project was a pilot project for 4 weeks over the summer holidays; based on the success of this the idea was to look for funding to run it on a 2-3 year basis with a paid coordinator so that a long term impact could be made.

500 hours of work were completed b the young people, who then went on 60 trips! The project improved relationships between young people and elderly residents on the estate, and also between young people and other residents.

The young people were able to experience new things and new places, and mixed more amongst themselves on the estate. This resulted in the residents being better equipped to work with young people and reduced complaints.

Ultimately it changed the expectations of young people by their parents, community members and, most importantly, themselves.

Stories of Transformation

"Some residents who used to complain about the young people brought out drinks for them while they were working."

"For school I can't get him out of bed; for Dreamscheme I can't keep him in bed!"

"I can't believe it's my son - he is so changed as a person."

"The 6 week holiday is usually full of fires, petty theft, petty vandalism. Everyone on the estate is saying to me how quiet it has been - no theft, vandalism, throwing bottles."

Work for the future includes fundraising for Uganda Dreamschemes, painting the park and shelter, patrolling the community, helping old people go shopping, cleaning up and improving play parks.
